"I am a professional photographer whose primary work involves photographing conventions. In the course of my work over the past 20 years I have photographed approximately 30 meetings a year, each one with multiple keynotes ranging from Sports Legends to Political World Leaders. With that said, I have never seen anyone as dynamic and moving as MK Mueller! I was absolutely floored by her energy, stage presence and "common sense" intelligence. She had the entire audience delighting in her every word. We wanted her to go on for hours. Take my word - there is no better speaker than MK Mueller!"

A Success Story from an 8 to Greater in Michigan:
November 16th at 7a.m. I knew I needed something to boost my IN-ergy level and was feeling a bit down about how people were saying about my youth center, "if you make it through this year it will be a MIRACLE." My response normally is,"Meet your miracle worker" or to sing,"I believe in miracles", however, I was growing tired of believing alone. Sometimes you'd just like someone to believe with you.
So on my way to a board meeting that I knew would determine the direction (or if there was even going to be a future) of our non-profit corporation, I popped in MK's book on cd and listened to it for the 15-minute drive. MK was part of a team of two (her and I) that morning through her book on cd. I was fired up when I walked into the board room. I knew that no matter what, things would work out perfectly.
Well, it was the most productive board meeting we've EVER had. The week before I walked into the room I was told that we had just enough money for the end of the month payroll. And upon leaving that board meeting, not only had 3 board members stepped up to donate $25,000 but we had the start of a very promising business plan. And during the next week, they held ad hoc committee meetings WITHOUT ME (yes, we have grown so big that I don't need to be everywhere, go figure) and after several interviews (which I did sit in on) we hired an amazing Grant writer/Fundraiser. I have to tell you, I'm still pinching myself. It seems I've been doing this for so long all by myself, but the donations and the hiring of a key staff member just helps me visualize even more what we can and will be. I'm learning to let go, if I want it to be as big as I've imagined, I've got to let go and surrender (Thank you High-Way 8!)
I'm not always in the "YES WE CAN" zone, so when I step out of that realm it's nice to know that I can pop in an "8 to Great" cd and WHAM, I'm back in business!
—Teresa Cunningham, 8 to Great Master Trainer
“...Over the years I've read and listened to many of the authors that you quote in this book -- Ziglar, Robbins, Dyer, Waitley, Hill, Canfield, and on and on--and finally, now, I have something that I can actually use... something that will let me practice these concepts daily to hone them into a newer ME. God bless you, MK!”
—Wm A. Brown
“Reading 8 to Great helped me realize what I want out of life and that I'm in control of getting it! In the past year I've gone from blaming others to being grateful every single day. I am a better teacher, stronger basketball coach and more caring parent thanks to the 8 High-Ways.”
—Jeff Hofeldt, head basketball coach and math teacher
“The world’s most practical text on the seemingly impractical topic of joy.”
—Barbara Shousha, M.Ed.
“I finished 8 to Great this morning at 7:30, stood in front of my large bathroom mirror, and hummed some rock & roll song as I danced happily. Then I kissed the book--with a great big smackaroo.”
—Bob Bosco, Ph.D., art professor, Creighton University

“I was allowing things from my past to prevent me from being successful. Now I have been listening to 8 to Great while in my car. I have learned that when I take responsibility for myself and become honest with myself, I am able to move past things which I allowed to hold me back. Every day I begin with my gratitudes and it starts me 'off and running.' I am truly grateful for 8 to Great and becoming the person I have dreamt of becoming.”
—Brian Bethel
“Thanks for showing me that I can make a change in my life because I have a choice. I cannot believe the difference 8 to Great has made in the lives of our teachers and students! May God continue to bless you and your message!”

—Kari S., high school senior
“Thanks to 8 to Great I'm having my 4th and 5th grade students write 3 gratitudes in their assignment books daily. It is only the 3rd day and already they are reminding each other to do it rather than me having to say anything. I'm also playing gratitude games with my 5th graders, which they love and want to do again and again!!”
—Megan Abresch, elementary teacher
Praise for the 8 to Great Middle and High School Curriculum based on the book:
“We can spend all the money we want on technology and processes, but until we meet the emotional needs of kids we're not going to see the kind of sustainable improvement in their success rate that we all hope for. Programs like 8 to Great are the future of education in America.”
—Theresa Petska, principal, Centura High School
“8 to Great is the missing piece in American education today.”
—Steve Shievers, superintendent, Crescent, OK
“Even though the curriculum is for older students, thanks to reading 8 to Great I'm having my 5th grade students write 3 gratitudes in their assignment books daily. It is only the 3rd day and they are reminding each other to do it rather than me having to say anything. I'm even playing gratitude games with them, which they love and want to do again and again!!”
—Megan Abresch, elementary teacher
“Your concert/talk touched so many students so deeply. I really believe that you and Michael put on the best rally we've ever had. And the turnout - over 450 - was the best in 7 years! God bless you and all your wonderful work! ”
—Laurie Ready, Dubuque, Iowa
The 8 High-Ways in a Nutshell
High-Way 1: Get the Picture
Visualizing the outcome until it feels good is the first step to any dream or goal. Once you’re clear on your destination, keep thinking about it until you can get excited by what it will be like. Then, from that good-feeling place, the next step will reveal itself as surely as the next yellow brick showed up on Dorothy’s road to Oz. Visualize yourself getting the diploma, driving the new car, or laughing with loved ones. It’ll take you straight to “95” on the Power Pyramid.
High-Way 2: Risk
Once your dream starts to take shape, your next step will be to take a risk to follow it. Cowards have the same amount of fear as heroes, but while cowards use their fear as an excuse to stay stuck, heroes feel the fear and do it anyway. Whether it’s the risk of telling the truth or pursuing a dream, the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. Risking is letting go of security as the world defines it for a larger safety net—being true to yourself. Risk is never running from (our fears)—it’s always running to (our dreams), so ask yourself, “If I had no fear, what would I do?”
High-Way 3: Full Responsibility
As we travel down the risk High-Way, obstacles and detours will inevitably appear. We can curse our “bad luck,” but not without being pulled off course. Full responsibility is the fundamental shift that allows us to take charge of our lives by owning that we were the ones who chose to go down the road of thoughts that didn’t feel good. Until we see that we’re in charge of our lives, we can feel trapped in a prison of resentment, bitterness, and confusion. When we acknowledge the power of our focus, we realize that we were never prisoners in the first place.
High-Way 4: Feel All Your Feelings
As challenges arise, allowing yourself to feel all your feelings returns you to the freedom of childhood, when emotions came and went without guilt or denial. When we realize that there are no “bad” feelings, we stop getting stuck in one feeling to prevent feeling another. We realize that we can feel mad and sad and still have a positive attitude. Once we’re freed up emotionally, we “feel” better physically as well. Finally, as we overcome the fear and judgment of our own emotions, we can more easily accept the feelings of others.
High-Way 5: Honest Communication
Once we get in touch with our emotions through High-Way 4, we’re ready to practice communicating them honestly with others in a self-responsible way. The practice of non-defensive listening and assertively asking for what we want will empower us and deepen our connection to those around us. When we risk taking responsibility rather than blaming others for them, we combine the first four High-Ways into an “inner-state” of loving joy.
High-Ways 6, 7, 8: The FGH Formula
The sixth, seventh, and eighth High-Ways make up the world’s most powerful positive attitude formula. Since attitude is mental, not emotional, and since all thoughts are either about the past, present, or future, we only need to practice three kinds of thoughts: FGH.
High-Way 6: Forgiveness of the Past is knowing we were all doing the best we could at the time with the information we had.
High-Way 7: Gratitude for the Present is focusing on appreciation and celebration of the good in every person and situation.
High-Way 8: Hope for the Future is the light within us, no matter how small, that helps us persevere through the darkness. It’s knowing that our destiny awaits us.
International trainer and author MK Mueller was a young high school teacher when she hit rock bottom and found herself in a domestic violence shelter. From the depths of despair, she experienced life-changing insights as she discovered that we are not victims because the power to effect change is always within us.
From this bold foundation, MK began a support group with five neighbors, which quickly grew to hundreds coming to hear her message each week. Now she trains over 100,000 people each year—from homeless shelter residents to Fortune 500 Executives—in the concepts from her first book, Taking Care of Me: The Habits of Happiness, and now those of her new book, 8 to Great: The Powerful Process for Positive Change.
MK is also the author of the 8 to Great Success Skills curriculum for middle and high schools. Winner of the Heartland Hero Award, her inspiring compositions have received national recognition. She is the proud Mom of two grown children and lives in Omaha, Nebraska. Read more...
